Diatomaceous earth is a type of powder made from the sediment of fossilized algae, called diatoms, found in bodies of water. Because the cells of these algae were high in a compound called silica, the dried sediment produced from these fossils is also very high in silica. Commercially available diatomaceous earth is said to contain 80–90% silica, several other trace minerals, and small amounts of iron oxide (rust).
Diatomaceous earth is extremely versatile and is often used because of its high silica content to benefit hair, skin, teeth and nail health. It can be used in body care as a gentle exfoliant and be added to a variety of products or can be used by itself mixed with water to form a paste and applied topically!
