Sterllaria media, chickweed, is a cool-season annual plant native to Europe, but naturalized in many parts of North America. It is sometimes called common chickweed to distinguish it from other plants called chickweed. Known active components include anthraquinones such as emodin, saponins, coumarins, phytosterols, and flavonoids.
Chickweed has long been used for healing and soothing purposes, such as reducing inflammation and fighting germs. Chickweed helps with cell proliferation, which allows for faster healing of wounds. Chickweed, applied as a poultice or added to a bath, can relieve severe itchiness accompanying eczema, nettle rash, and varicose veins; aid in healing boils and accesses; or soothe inflamed joints.
Chickweed may be infused into an oil, made into tea, or applied directly to the skin!
