A Natural Deodorant Recipe That Works

Embarrassing as this is to say, I’ve always had issues dealing with sweat and odor.  I thought the only way to tackle this was to buy the strongest anti-perspirant, but that never really worked for me.  In my thirties, when I decided to go back to University, I started to learn about all the chemicals in our food and their impact on the environment and our health.  This scared me and was a big time wake-up call – I thought government regulations were suppose to protect us from harm, but I was clearly wrong.  Then I started to look at ingredients in all products and it got even scarier!  There were harmful chemicals in practically everything I was buying for me and my family.

When researching the typical harmful ingredients in deodorant, such as aluminum and parabens, I knew I had to make a change.  First, I tried the natural crystal and then other natural types of deodorants from health stores – they didn’t work for me.  I ended up having to carry around the deodorant with me everywhere and constantly reapply.  Since these deodorants didn’t work, and some of the “natural” deodorants still had questionable ingredients, I decided to research what natural ingredients work the best to address odor and sweat.  I ran into many recipes and thought I’d try making my own.  After many tries with many different recipes I have finally found one that works!!!! YAY!!!

A little bit about the ingredients…

Arrowroot Powder detoxifies, absorbs and keeps moisture in your skin, leaving a smooth silky texture.

Coconut Oil is an amazing moisturizing oil that has many uses due to its antibacterial properties, making it a perfect ingredient for deodorant.  If you want to keep your deodorant recipe very simple, you can even simply mix this oil with some baking soda and lavender.

Beeswax keeps the deodorant in a stable solid form while locking in the moisturizing and healing properties of the other ingredients.

Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) is a fine powder derived from a rock composed of fossilized algae.  It is known to be rich in Silica which is great for our skin.  It also possesses antibacterial, antiviral, and detoxifying properities.

Baking Soda is an odor neutralizer.  If you have sensitive skin like me, I only used 1 tbsp, however some may need at least 2 tbsp.

Tea Tree Essential Oil is essential due to it’s antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Lavender Essential Oil smells great and soothes skin.

Other great essential oils for deodorant include : Sage, Chamomile, Bergamot, Lemongrass

Tea Tree and Lavender Recipe

6 tbsp Arrowroot Powder

1 tbs Diatomaceous Earth

2 tbs Beeswax

6 tbs Coconut Oil

1 tbs Baking Soda

20 drops Lavender essential oil

20 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

¼ tsp Vitamin E (optional)

Use a double boiler to melt the beeswax and coconut oil, or you can boil an inch of water in a wide pot and put a stainless steel bowl over top. Once they are completely melted, remove them from the heat.  Mix in the arrowroot powder, baking soda and diatomaceous earth.  Next mix in the essentials oil and Vitamin E.  Mix well.

If using an old deodorant container, allow this to cool and solidify a little then spoon into the container.  Tap the container on the counter to allow the mixture to settle and remove air pockets.  Otherwise, you can place in any container but it may be hard to dig out with your fingers to apply.  One other option I found was to get the inner part of a toilet paper roll, put in plastic wrap, and then fill when the mixture is soft but not liquid.  Allow to completely harden before use (about 12-24 hrs).
